Gardening Corner Diary Week 1 🌱

Hi everyone and welcome to the Gardening Corner!

This is Day 1 of the Gardening Corner Diary! I have been growing these plants for about 1 month now and am so excited to share their progress with you!

First up we have the CORN!!!!

STATUS: 2/7 CONFIRMED SPROUTING; 1/7 UNCONFIRMED SPROUTING; 4/7 UNSPROUTED

This is the first corn to sprout and wow is it growing! This little guy sprouted about a week ago and has been growing quickly ever since! He is sooooo cute and my heart just melts whenever I see him! An interesting observation that I’ve made is that his color is just so vibrant, it almost looks as if he’s fake! So amazing what nature can do!

Out of the 7 little corn plants that I am growing, this guy is the tallest and the only one inside. The rest of his buddies either haven’t sprouted yet or just sprouted and are under an inch tall!

Next up is the TOMATOES and the PEPPER Plant!

TOMATOES!

STATUS: ALIVE! 1/3 HEALTHY AND WELL; 2/3 OK, SLIGHTLY SHRIVELED

At the moment, I am growing 3 tomato plants. One of them is really healthy, (the one in the photo), however, the other two’s bottom leaves turned a bit yellow over the last week! I have increased watering and hope that that will help these 2 guys become healthy and strong like their buddy in the photo!

PEPPER!

STATUS: ALIVE AND WELL

As for my one pepper, he is looking GREAT! Really vibrant color and lots of leaves! He is all alone as my only pepper plant but he is definitely representing the peppers well! Here is a photo of how he is doing today! ->

Today, it is super hot out so I’m hoping that my plants do okay! I gave them some water this morning and there are reports that rain will be coming on Tuesday so that will be very good!!!!!!

Now, the LETTUCE!

STATUS: ALIVE AND WELL; 10/12 SPROUTED; 2/12 UNSPROUTED

The lettuce is doing REALLY WELL! My mom and I are big romaine lettuce eaters, so we have tons of lettuce in our house. When my mom told me that we can use the base of the lettuce to grow more, I was surprised and eager to try! Now we have, so far, 12 lettuces bases sitting on our window sill in about 3/4 of an inch of water each. I change the water every 3-4 days and so far I have had a ton of success! To the right is the biggest sprout so far! ->

I hope to be able to plant these sprouts in dirt once they grow long enough roots!

Stay tuned for UPDATES!

As for the RASPBERRY………

STATUS: DEAD (ABSOLUTE FAILURE!)

This guy came to me from my amazing neighbor as a stick with a lot of roots. I planted it in my backyard, curious to see what would happen! However, due to miscommunication in my family, when I looked for it today, I found it crushed under the dry aquarium holding my other plants! WHOOPS!!!!

So after realizing that it has been being squashed for at least a week and all of its roots except for three really tiny ones are no longer attached to the stem, I sadly have declared it DEAD!

RIP RASPBERRY PLANT!

I am sooo sorry!

Now on a brighter note, a success story from a supposedly near death plant:

Last, but certainly not least is the BLACKBERRY PLANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

STATUS: ALIVE AND WELL

This little guy has QUITE the backstory!

It all started at the beginning of quarantine about 2 weeks in. My neighbor, a big gardener had ordered a lot of plants and didn’t have room for them all. She kindly gave my family a blackberry plant with three little leaves! He was so cute and we found a great spot for him, right where we thought was in direct sun, what the instructions said he needed! It turned out the sun had been behind a cloud because when I came back to water him, 5 minutes later, he was in the one patch of shade, with a big ring of sun around him but not touching him!

Oh no! So then I had to transplant him over about three inches into the sun! Finally, I was done!

For the next three days, I watered him, so proud of myself. Then, on the fourth day, I went out side to water, and he was gone! I thought aliens had come and abducted my poor little blackberry plant. But then, I saw a little stick, sticking out of the dirt! It was my blackberry plant! It wasn't aliens, it was rabbits, who had eaten all of the leaves off overnight! I was FURIOUS!

I quickly dug my blackberry plant up and carefully put him in an old yogurt container with holes punched into the bottom for drainage. Then, I put the container in a clear empty aquarium that we weren’t using and hoped that with lots of care and his new protection from the rabbits (the aquarium), my blackberry plant might survive!

Now, over a month later, I see he has some new leaves! I am so HAPPY! It is so amazing how plants can come back from near death!

GLAD TO END ON A GOOD NOTE!

STAY TUNED FOR MORE UPDATES AND

HAPPY GARDENING!!!!!!
